In cars equipped with the traditional inertia switch following a collision or accident, the power supply to the fuel pump is cut off to prevent possible fires due to fuel leakage. This prevention is possible since the inertial switch is placed in series on the negative line (ground) of the fuel pump: in the event of a collision the inertial switch is activated by opening the circuit, cutting off the power supply to the electric pump.
