Glow plugs are nothing more than electric resistors that, when the ignition is turned on, heat up in order to preheat the combustion chamber and create the best thermodynamic conditions for the cold start of a diesel engine, in which the combustion occurs through self-ignition of the air-fuel mixture generated by the compression of the mixture itself by the pistons. Since there is no external ignition, it is very important to preheat the combustion chamber. Therefore, in case of a failed cold start, one of the possible causes could be the malfunctioning of one or more glow plugs. A very quick method to check if the glow plugs are efficient is to verify that they are not open. Connect the warning light to the positive pole of the battery and touch the power pins of the glow plugs inside their respective connector with the test probe. If the warning light turns on, then the glow plugs are not interrupted.
