The first thing to check to verify the correct functioning of the preheating system is that the glow plugs are being powered by the corresponding relay: this check can be done using a simple indicator light or a multimeter. Connect one end of the indicator light to ground and the other to the glow plug: when the ignition is turned on, the glow plug indicator light will come on, and the indicator light will remain on for a few seconds after the instrument panel light goes off before turning off. The same check can be done by setting the multimeter to the 20 Volt direct current scale, connecting one end to ground and the other to the glow plug. In this case, when the ignition is turned on, the multimeter will indicate the voltage supplied to the glow plugs, which will then drop to zero a few seconds after the instrument panel light goes off. Once it is verified that the power supply is functioning correctly, it is necessary to ensure that the glow plugs are efficient: since they are resistors, it is necessary to check that they are not broken and that their resistance value is correct. Their continuity can be checked using the indicator light: disconnect the power eyelet, connect the indicator light to the positive terminal of the battery and the other end to the glow plug. If the indicator light comes on, the glow plug is not broken. To measure its electrical resistance value, set the multimeter to the 200 ohm scale, connect one end to ground and the other to the glow plug: an efficient glow plug should have an electrical resistance value lower than 2 ohms. Finally, the glow plug can be removed (blow around its seat to remove any dirt residues that could end up in the cylinder) and powered with two battery cables to verify that the bulb becomes uniformly incandescent. Apply copper grease to the thread before installing the glow plug.
