Once the battery's position has been identified, which in the case of the car in question is located on the passenger side, just below the windshield, check that the terminals are tightly secured and do not show any signs of oxide or corrosion; also check that the battery does not have any acid leaks. The first measurement of the battery's charge status must be done with the engine off and the ignition on (the battery light must turn off); place the multimeter on the 20V direct current scale, and connect the probes to the battery terminals respecting the polarity: an efficient battery should give a voltage value between 12.3V and 13.5V.

Check the voltage drop during the starting phase to test the battery's starting power: it should not drop below 8V. Then proceed to check the charging system, making sure that the auxiliary belt that drives the alternator pulley is intact and does not have any cracks; start the engine, make sure the battery light turns off, and measure the voltage at the battery terminals: it should have a value between 13.2V and 14.8V. Finally, to check the stability of the alternator regulator, activate all electrical devices (lights, turn signals, defroster, cabin fan) and check that the voltage does not drop below 13.2V (it may be necessary to accelerate a bit).
