We need to leave, we get in the car and start the engine; here comes the error light with the message to check the coolant. Let's not panic, turn off the engine and pull the lever to open the hood. Get out of the car and open the hood; locate the expansion tank and check the level of the liquid inside. The engine must be cold, otherwise the liquid that has expanded with the heat can distort the check. Also, with a hot engine the system is under pressure and by opening the cap we risk it escaping with the danger of burns. Therefore, working with a cold engine, if the level is below the "min" mark then we need to top up. It would be good to keep a bottle of ready-to-use liquid in the car to add without further problems; in general, the type of liquid is indicated in the user manual and maintenance booklet and for the Golf 7 it should be called "Antifreeze G13". In the absence of suitable liquid, for a small top-up we can also use distilled water which, although it does not have the characteristics of the liquid, is free of limescale.
