The diesel pump doesn't break suddenly: up until that point, it will have given symptoms that you have neglected until the inevitable breakdown. The symptoms are that the car "loses power", the engine remains at low RPMs and there may be problems with acceleration. There may also be suspicious noises coming from the engine compartment. The culprit is almost always an excess of residual water that remains in the diesel, which is why it is recommended to refuel at multiple gas stations in order to diversify.
