What do the red and yellow oil warning lights mean in the BMW 3 series?

If the oil warning light comes on, it can be a sign of a very serious fault, as it is red in color. In fact the oil sight glass has no relationship with the quantity of oil present in the engine. Instead, it indicates a drop in pressure in the system, which is much more serious, and implies that you must stop your car immediately. The yellow one, on the other hand, indicates that the oil level is low and you need to top it up, or that it has deteriorated and you need to replace it.
