What to do if the electric parking brake does not work on a Volkswagen Passat?

The electric handbrake, also called EPB (Electric Parking Brake) is the electric version of the handbrake, where an electric motor operates the parking brake mechanism. When this does not work, one is led to think of a motor failure, or a loss of calibration of the actuator work points, but it could also be a simple electrical problem of the dedicated button, which induces a conflict in the software of the EPB control unit, deactivating the system. In this case the problem is solved by replacing the button.
