Answer

If the gear of your Smart Fortwo does not engage, you must first make sure that the battery is OK; turn on the ignition; put the gear selector in "N"; press the brake pedal fully for about 5 seconds. Electric noises will be heard which will reactivate the gearbox and the word "N" will appear on the dashboard at which point the gear will engage.
