The Fiat Punto power steering malfunction has accompanied this car since its debut, and it has never abandoned it. On the forums the question was practically only one: What to do if the power steering of the Punto is blocked? On the Fiat Punto there is a "City" button, with which the steering wheel is less light and more force is needed, but this does not at all mean that pressing the "city" button deactivates the Dual drive power steering. The solutions on the other hand, for cars produced up to 2003, consist in replacing the two relays on the power steering electronic board and which control the movement of steering in both directions. In addition, restore the soldering on the electronic board, should they be interrupted. For subsequent productions, this path is no longer viable, because the relays are integrated into the internal electronics of the engine. The problem moves to the torque sensor, or other components that only specialized workshops, but not part of the official circuit, are able to repair. This is because the Fiat network follows the path of total steering gear change: a very, very sustained expense. However, first check that there is no problem with the battery. It is an electric power steering; if the battery has a voltage lower than 12V it cannot turn the power steering. Try a booster. When it comes to the battery, the alternator is also always involved. Take a look at that too, maybe you can't recharge the battery conveniently. With your OBD Scanner, take a look at the codes: maybe they are just power steering sensors giving error codes, which you can clear yourself. It is worth a try.
