How to Replace the Power Steering Motor on the Fiat Punto 188

The failure of the electric power steering, commonly known as city steering, on the Fiat Punto 188 is a well-known issue, but it is easy to find spare parts and DIY repair instructions; the most common fault concerns the power steering motor and particularly the relays that control its operation; once you have obtained a new or refurbished motor, the replacement can be done without removing the steering column: simply remove the access cover of the dashboard that leads to the OBD port and the casing under the column; at this point, it is easy to access the three fixing bolts of the motor, and you will need to disconnect the two connectors from the control unit to remove it completely; if the fault concerns the torque and position sensor, the entire column will need to be removed, and it is advisable to install a new, not used, sensor.
