Electric Power Steering Motor Repair

One of the most common faults with the electric power steering on the Fiat Punto 188 first series (power steering control unit code 6971) involves the drive motor, particularly the failure of the relays in the electronic circuit. The repair is relatively simple, but you need to be skilled in soldering and have the appropriate tools, especially a desoldering tool. To remove the motor, you do not need to take out the entire steering column; just remove the diagnostic port cover, the lower casing of the indicator stalk, and the metal shield. Then, unscrew the three mounting bolts of the motor and disconnect the plugs from the control unit. Once on the workbench, extract the electronic circuit by desoldering the winding wires, remove the old relays, and install the new ones, ensuring the pins do not touch the rotating magnetic disc; reassemble everything and install it back in the vehicle.
