The legal chassis number (VIN) is not the one displayed on the plate found on the driver's side windscreen. That, just so you know, is a courtesy plate used by dealers to move the vehicle when it is still without registration plates.

The legal chassis number, which is stamped directly on the vehicle's chassis and which the police may ask you to show for cross-checking with the registration document, has a different location for each make, model, and version. In the case of the Fiat 500 312, it is located in the boot, on the right side (the passenger side) on the longitudinal beam under the carpet.
