How to replace the drum brakes on the Renault Clio.

Model: Renault Clio MK 4, Clio 4, Clio IV - Years 2012-2019
Part: Brake drums and shoes

On your Renault Clio, replacing the rear drum brakes should be done with care because it involves safety components and often the hydraulic system if the wheel cylinders are being changed. Before you begin, place the car on a stable surface, engage a gear, and position wheel chocks on the wheels that are not lifted. Loosen the wheel bolts while the car is on the ground, then lift the rear and support the vehicle on jack stands, leaving the jack only as a temporary support.

With the wheel removed, access the drum/hub assembly and remove the dust cap if present; at this point, work on loosening the drum/hub fastening with an appropriate socket, avoiding any hits or levers that could damage the bearing. Carefully pull off the drum: if it resists, check that the shoes are not too "open" and that the handbrake is fully released. Once the drum is removed, observe the orientation of springs, levers, and adjusters so that each element can be reassembled in the same position.

To replace the brake shoes, release the tension of the return springs and remove the retaining clips, then free the shoes from the lower support point and the upper connection on the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the handbrake linkage from the lever on the shoe and check the condition of the adjuster/compensator. Clean the backing plate and the contact points, removing dust and debris with a specific brake cleaning product; apply only a thin layer of high-temperature grease exclusively on the metallic contact points, without contaminating the friction surfaces of the shoes.

If the work also includes replacing the brake cylinders, carefully disconnect the hydraulic fitting to avoid damaging the threads, collecting any fluid that may leak and protecting the area to prevent DOT fluid from damaging paint and plastics. Unscrew the fittings of the cylinder, replace it with the new part, and reconnect the hose without forcing, ensuring that the seating is correct and that there are no leaks.

Reassemble the new brake shoes by correctly repositioning the linkages, springs, and retainers, making sure that the ends of the shoes are aligned with the support points and that the pistons of the cylinder are working in line. Adjust the adjuster so that the drum fits without unusual effort, then reassemble the drum/hub and close it with the dust cap. Reattach the wheel, lower the car, and tighten the wheel bolts according to the manufacturer's specifications.
