Answer

In the Volkswagen Golf Mk4, the coolant temperature sensor is located just below the EGR valve. It's a little hard to see, but you get there. There should be a plastic clip that sticks out a bit and that is pulled off with long nose pliers. When the sensor is extracted a little liquid is lost, so it is advisable that the engine is cold, then provide a basin to collect it and a little liquid for topping up.
