Most Porsche 911 Generation 996 models have this kind of problem. In general, the problem is due to a failure of an IMS bearing which causes debris to generate and interfere with the gears. When this happens, it is necessary to take action to dismantle the motor piece by piece and reassemble it again. Unfortunately in these cases the cam timing can be affected, leading to valve-piston impact, which requires a rebuild or replacement of the entire engine.
