Sludge in the engine is a problem that does not only affect the Kia Rio, and it is predictable in most cases. What is improperly referred to as "sludge" is a thick, gelatinous substance that accumulates in the engine oil circuit.

It is the result of oil degradation, which mixes with combustion residues, water, dust, and metal particles. It resembles tar or a hardened black paint.

The main reason for the formation of this sludge is an excessively long oil change interval: the oil degrades, loses its properties, and transforms into this viscous substance; another reason is poor oil quality: cheap oils may have inferior cleaning/dispersing additives.

There can also be more specific issues, such as overheating, short and frequent trips, and damage to the head gasket or the crankcase ventilation system.
