Start by removing the chrome trim at the base of the lever. You can use a flathead screwdriver or a plastic lever to avoid damaging the surrounding trim. Next, pry off the white ring that secures the spring for engaging reverse gear. This white ring may be tight, so don't hesitate to apply some force.
