The legal chassis number on a vehicle is not the one shown on the plate on the left side of the windshield, on the driver's side. That is a courtesy number used by dealers to move the vehicle until it has a license plate. The legal chassis number, which the Motorization will want to see in case of inspection and testing, or which the Traffic Police may ask for a cross-check with the number shown in your logbook, is stamped on the vehicle's chassis. In the case of the Smart 453, it is located on the rear floor, between the driver's seat and the passenger's seat, under the upholstery.
