The legal chassis number on a vehicle is not the one displayed on the plate on the left side of the windscreen, on the driver's side. That is a courtesy number used by dealers to move the vehicle until it has a registration plate.

The legal chassis number, which the DVLA will want to see in case of verification and testing, or which the police may ask for during a cross-check with the number on your logbook, is stamped on the vehicle's chassis. In the case of the Smart 453, it is located on the rear floor, between the driver's seat and the passenger seat, under the upholstery.
