Start by removing the old piece from its housing by pushing from inside the center console storage. There are two screws you need to remove to pull out the damaged piece. After cleaning the area where the cup holder will be reinstalled (the damage was likely due to neglect), install the new piece, which connects to the storage compartment using the two screws you removed earlier. Now the mechanism works perfectly.
