How to Resolve the Dashboard Light When Switching from Halogen to LED Bulbs
Model: (Various brands) Various
Video tutorial
When replacing halogen bulbs with LED ones, the dashboard light comes on: the electronic control unit monitors the status of the bulbs by measuring the electrical resistance of the circuit. A halogen bulb has low resistance; an LED bulb consumes much less, so it has higher resistance. For the control unit, this difference is indistinguishable from an open circuit, and it thinks the bulb is blown or disconnected, which is why the light comes on. Solutions include adding dummy resistors by connecting a resistor in parallel to the LED bulb that simulates the consumption of the old halogen. This is economical and easy to install but negates the energy-saving benefits of LEDs. The best solution is to buy high-quality "can bus ready" LED bulbs; alternatively, reprogram the control unit to recognise LEDs as normal components. This is not a solution within everyone's reach; professional equipment and technical knowledge are required.
