How does a fuse work and what is it for?

Do we really know what a fuse is for and how it works? A fuse is a safety device that protects electrical circuits from overcurrent (an excess of current). But how does it work? It consists of two contacts connected by an internal conductor wire. When the current exceeds a certain limit, the wire heats up (producing the so-called "Joule effect", a physical phenomenon where an electric conductor carrying current generates heat due to the friction of electrons in the material) until it melts, breaking the circuit. Each fuse has a specific response time based on the current. Once blown, the fuse must be replaced, as the internal conductor is damaged.
