What is the throttle body for on gasoline vehicles? It is explained in this video. It is used to partially restrict the air entering the combustion chambers, which must be mixed with fuel. This device is actually never completely closed, a little air always passes through; however, if it becomes clogged with deposits, it is the reason why the car idles roughly and must be cleaned: this way we solve the problem. The valve is partially restricted by the engine control unit, with the potentiometer we have on the accelerator. In diesel engines it works differently: the valve is generally open, and we use it mainly as an anti-shudder device when the engine is turned off, but it is also used while driving to partially restrict the air for DPF regeneration.
