If the BMW 3 Series gearbox were to become stuck or if it were impossible to start the engine due to a malfunction, it is possible to unlock the gearbox by holding down the brake and start & stop button and pulling the gear lever while pressing the unlock button as you would when the engine is running. This operation can unlock the gearbox for 15 minutes.
