The issue of the mileage flashing after installing an aftermarket radio is common in Fiat 500s: this is because the original Fiat radio communicates with the car's CAN-BUS network, and when replaced with a generic radio, this communication is interrupted.

The instrument unit no longer receives the presence signal from the radio, enters 'error mode', and flashes the mileage to indicate a fault.

The solution is to correctly configure the new radio: go to 'settings' and look for 'factory settings', then 'car settings'. You will be prompted for a code, often consisting of just six zeros. Enter the menu and look for 'car type' and select the manufacturer: 'Fiat'. This is a crucial step as there are different CAN BUS system options depending on the year of manufacture, so if you are unsure of the correct type, you will need to try, turning the car off and on again to see if the flashing has stopped.

If the problem persists, then the issue is likely the antenna; indeed, on many Fiats, if a certain type of adapter is missing, the car thinks there is an attempted theft and causes the dashboard to flash. The solution is to install this adapter, which can be easily found online.
