Here is a simple video showing how to replace the gear knob on a Mini Cooper. After removing the knob to be replaced, fasten the boot (which must be turned upwards) to the gear rod with a plastic clamp. Match the base of the boot with the base of the rear derailleur so that the fixing points are well aligned. Using a knife, hook the circular clip (made up of two pieces) at the meeting point between the base of the knob and the upper part of the cap. Take the new knob and, after aligning it correctly, exert a little pressure so that it hooks onto the clip you just installed.
