How to Adjust the Handbrake Tension on a Renault Megane II

Let's see how to adjust the handbrake on a Renault Megane II: remove the centre tunnel between the front seats, which is usually secured with a few screws located under the lamp holders or storage compartments (depending on the trim) and then with clips that need to be carefully pulled out. Once the console is removed, you will see the handbrake mechanism. At the base of the lever, you will find a nut connecting the two handbrake cables. Using a spanner, tighten this nut a few turns; the more you tighten it, the more the cables will tension. Pull the handbrake lever and count the number of "clicks"; a correct adjustment is when the handbrake locks the wheels between the 3rd and 4th click. Reassemble everything in reverse order. It is very important never to overtighten the nut, as the rear brakes may remain slightly engaged, overheating and wearing out prematurely: the adjustment should leave a small play.
