In this video, some differences between timing belt and timing chain are illustrated: The belt is made of reinforced rubber with fibers, it is lighter and quieter than the chain; on the other hand, it has a limited lifespan and must be replaced periodically according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually between 80,000 and 120,000 km. It does not require special maintenance, just to be replaced at the expiration date, which is also temporal, about 5/6 years. Usually it is less expensive, both as a component and as the cost of replacement. Let's see the chain, which is made of metal, so it is more robust and resistant to wear, therefore it has a longer lifespan, theoretically even for the entire life of the engine, but it requires periodic checks and needs to be replaced in case of wear or breakage of some components; consequently, the replacement is more expensive as the component is more complex and requires more time and labor.
