How to Replace the Timing Belt on a 1.5 dCi Engine Renault Nissan Mercedes Dacia

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: Timing belt

Video tutorial

This is an important intervention that requires advanced mechanical skills and specific tools: It is essential to purchase a complete timing belt kit that includes the belt, tensioner, pulleys, and engine pulley bolt. It is advisable to also replace the water pump and auxiliary belts.

Before working on the timing belt, several components must be removed to access the work area, such as the fuel filter, auxiliary belt, engine mount (it will need to be supported), and the crankshaft pulley. The heart of the operation is the timing with the rotation to the top dead centre (TDC); lock the crankshaft by bringing it into contact with the pin and lock the camshaft, then lock the high-pressure pump.

Now remove the timing covers, remove the water pump, replace the tensioner and belt, and fit the new tensioner without fully tightening it. Tension the belt by rotating the tensioner counter-clockwise until the marks align, then tighten the cam bolt, remove the locking pins, and turn the crankshaft by hand for at least two complete turns clockwise.

Check the timing and refit the components that were removed.

Top up the coolant.

The jack is located under the driver's seat, secured to a bracket and protected by a plastic cover, which you can remove by acting on the fixing clips.
