How Gear Cascade Distributions Work

The gear cascade distribution is a transmission system that connects the crankshaft to the camshafts using a series of toothed gears. It is a simple system, but it requires absolute precision in its construction. The crankshaft has a toothed gear fixed to its end: this is the starting point. To reach the camshafts (which are positioned higher than the crankshaft), a drive gear is used to change the direction of rotation and allows multiple shafts to be connected. The result is a perfectly synchronised gear train that transfers rotary motion from the crankshaft to the camshafts with a fixed ratio. The main advantage is reliability: nothing can break here, the gears do not stretch, and there is no play, plus it can handle very high speeds. Naturally, there are also disadvantages: to start with, production costs are extremely high, and the system is very noisy, heavy, bulky, and inflexible.
