How to Make an Automatic Gearbox Last Longer

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: Transmission

Video tutorial

The video addresses an interesting and often underestimated point. The longevity of an automatic gearbox is the result of a combination of factors: specific maintenance, attention to electronics, and correct driving style.

The video is very precise: modern automatic gearboxes are complex electro-hydraulic systems managed by a control unit that receives data from sensors on speed, engine load, temperature, and much more. The gearbox control unit operates solenoids that regulate oil flow and pressures to change gears in the smoothest and most efficient manner.

If the voltage supplied by the battery is unstable, the valves do not open and close accurately; therefore, a flat battery or a malfunctioning alternator can cause voltage spikes that lead to incorrect oil pressures and premature wear. It is important to keep both the alternator and the battery under control.

Also, keep in mind that gearbox oil is not 'lifetime' as often claimed by car manufacturers: it degrades like any other oil, so it should be changed every 60,000 to 80,000 km (4 to 5 years) even if the manual states it is maintenance-free.
