What is a Smart Alternator?

In this video, it is explained what a smart alternator is and how it differs from a traditional one. The smart alternator reduces the voltage during acceleration, even below 12 Volts, to lighten the load on the engine, reducing consumption and emissions. During deceleration or braking, it uses kinetic energy to send voltage spikes (up to 17 Volts) and quickly recharge the battery. The ECU regulates the alternator based on driving style, electrical load, and battery state. How can we tell if our vehicle has a smart alternator? With a multimeter, measure the voltage at the battery with the engine running. If it fluctuates between 10 and 17 Volts, it is "smart"; if it is stable at 14 Volts, it is normal. You can also perform a simple manual check in the user and maintenance manual. If it is indicated as EU6 or "smart charge", then it is smart, but vehicles built after 2015 mostly have it.
