Wiring Diagram for a One-Wire or Two-Wire Alternator

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: Checks and maintenance

Video tutorial
Detailed instructions - Let's look at how a one-wire alternator works: the alternator has one cable connected, which is the positive terminal that goes directly to the positive side of the battery. The circuit is completed through the engine ground and the battery. The alternator self-excites when it starts to spin. Installation is very simple and ideal for basic vehicles like tractors, boats, and classic cars. The two-wire alternator has a thick wire and a thin one. The thin wire is used to excite the alternator at startup (via the ignition key) and to turn on the battery warning light on the dashboard if the alternator is not charging. When the alternator is charging, the light goes out (voltage equal on both sides).
