When we fill the coolant tank of our car, we should NEVER fill it beyond the maximum level indicated on the tank. This is very important because as the car operates, it heats up, producing vapors that take up space inside the system. The empty space found in the expansion tank (if it is called that, there must be a reason) is there to expand the vapors of the liquid inside the system. If this space were occupied by liquid, the vapors could cause the system to explode, causing damage that can easily be imagined.

How to Open the Bonnet on the Lancia Y
