To drive the camshaft(s) at half speed and in perfect synchronisation with the crankshaft, a transmission is required, which can be achieved in various ways: the two most common in car engines are with a chain and with a toothed belt. The former is generally maintenance-free, while the latter may require replacement after a certain mileage (from 75,000 miles upwards) or a certain time period (from three to ten years). This is because the rubber that makes up the belt's covering and teeth (the core is made of textile cords) tends to degrade and wear out over time and mileage.
