Answer

The rpm sensor is located on the gearbox, near the tone wheel; the phonic wheel is in fact a wheel with squared teeth axial to the crankshaft and on which the engine rpm / position sensor faces: the revolutions are detected based on the frequency with which the teeth pass over the sensor, while the position is determined by the lack of of a couple of teeth on the wheel itself.
