Answer

Many standard trailer lights use traditional incandescent bulbs. While these may be fully functional when the trailer is new, over time the seals around the detachable lens covers fail, allowing water to enter the lightweight cases. When reversing down the boat ramp, the lights go underwater. If the seals are gone, as soon as the water touches the hot bulb, the thermal shock often causes the bulbs to fail. Water also causes corrosion, and although a little dielectric grease or a splash of WD-40 might help, it's only a matter of time before rusty components, such as sockets and connections, stop the lights from working.
