What are the reasons why the water light comes on?

The reasons why the water warning light can come on are basically two: the first is the lack of coolant, and the second is that the temperature has risen above the allowed limit. It could also be a malfunction of the warning light, of course, but we shouldn't rely too much on that. So the first thing to do is to check the temperature of the "water"; if it goes above 90°C, then we must turn off the engine; if we don't have a temperature gauge, then we should turn it off even more, because the warning light comes on to tell us that the temperature is already too high. Check the coolant reservoir: if it's empty, we've already found the problem. In this case, just to get to the nearest mechanic, we can even just use water. If the coolant is there and the temperature doesn't rise, then it's a malfunction of the warning light. If the coolant is there and the temperature continues to rise, then we need to call a tow truck, because we risk causing serious damage.
