How Electronic Suspension Works on a BMW R1200GS

The electronic suspension on the BMW R 1200GS is often referred to by the acronym ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) and allows the rider to adjust the damping characteristics and spring preload via electric controls, usually buttons on the handlebars.

The system is controlled by an ECU that monitors the motorcycle's behaviour, and based on the selected settings, sends commands to the shock absorbers' actuators, which are not of the traditional passive type but integrate stepper motors and electromagnetic valves that modify the oil flow inside.

This way, the damping and compression force can be varied.
