Replacing the Third Brake Light on BMW 5 Series

Open the trunk and remove the cover beneath the third brake light (inside the headliner). To detach the cover, simply pull it with your hands. Slightly rotate the bulb holder and pull it out; it will come free from its socket. Similarly, rotate the bulb slightly (counterclockwise) and pull it out of the holder. Insert the new bulb properly and screw it in lightly until it stops (just under a quarter turn). Place the holder and bulb back into their compartment and ensure they are secure. Reattach the cover.
