Squeaks and Whistles Indicate a Pulley Bearing Needs Replacement

Some engines have a timing chain enclosed in a cover that does not require maintenance. Other cars, like the one in this video, more commonly have a timing belt. The timing belt is always driven by the engine through a series of pulleys. The pulleys guide the belt, but at least one or two of them also maintain the belt at the proper tension to transmit motion smoothly and accurately. Obviously, the pulleys rotate on ball or roller bearings. If, while accelerating the engine, you hear whistles and squeaks similar to those in the video, there is a good chance that the tensioner pulley needs to be replaced.
