To replace the timing chain tensioner on a BMW 5 Series, open the hood to access the components inside the engine compartment. The tensioner is located at the front of the engine compartment, as this vehicle has a longitudinally mounted engine. You can access the tensioner by removing the air filter and the cover at the front of the engine block. This will allow you to loosen the bolts securing the tensioner, enabling you to remove it and then replace it with a new replacement part.
