Mass Air Flow Sensor Repair Instructions
Model: BMW Serie 5
E39
- Years 1995-2003
If the engine shows power delivery issues, there may be a problem with the mass air flow sensor, which provides incorrect information to the engine control unit about the amount of air entering the engine. Inside the mass air flow sensor, there is a potentiometer with sliding contacts that controls the position of the air deflector, which moves according to the air flow rate. Because it uses sliding contacts, the device is subject to wear. The repair involves ensuring good contact by applying a piece of wire between the two elements. First, remove the plastic cover, then disconnect the connector and the potentiometer. Clean the tracks and solder a piece of wire to the contact on the connector, then solder the other end to the potentiometer.
