Removing the Ignition Switch

Model: BMW Serie 5 E39 - Years 1995-2003

Due to wear on the contacts, the ignition switch located right behind the ignition key may prevent the vehicle from starting or may not activate the accessory power that controls almost all onboard services, such as the radio or courtesy lights. To easily replace it, first lower the steering wheel adjustment all the way down (in this vehicle, the control is electrically operated); then remove the plastic covers from the turn signal controls, disconnect the connector attached to the switch, and remove the two screws protected by red wax to take it out.
