Perform these checks monthly to avoid surprises. After ensuring all lights are functioning and lit (including indicators and brake lights), check the wear on the front tyre by inserting a £2 coin into the tread; this will give you an idea of how much rubber has worn away. When the silver part of the coin is completely hidden in the groove, it means the tyres are nearly due for replacement. Do the same with the rear tyre. If you have a gauge instead of using a coin, that is obviously much better. Also, frequently check the oil level and the play in the drive chain: it should not exceed 15 mm.
