How to Replace the Bonnet Strut on the Mercedes SLK R170

Model: Mercedes Slk - Years 1997-2004
Part: Convertible top

On a Mercedes SLK R170 (1999 model), after 27 years, the original strut is likely worn out. If you are alone, prop the bonnet up with something, as it is heavy. You will only need a screwdriver and the new strut, which can be found on AlExpress with code 4001163720765 for £35.29 + £2.24 delivery. The attachment has two points: a circlip and a hook. To remove the circlip, turn it and slide it out; keep it as you will need it. To detach the hook, insert the screwdriver into the clip and pop it out. The new strut may have an extension to remove: there are two buttons marked "Press" that need to be pressed simultaneously to unlock it. Retrieve the upper cap from the old strut: unscrew it and screw it onto the new one. Once reattached, insert the new strut, press the buttons, and snap it into the two locking areas. Reinsert the circlip exactly as it was (facing you, then turn it). Remove the prop. Done.
