How to replace the electronic power steering on a Mercedes GLA W156

Model: Mercedes Gla MK 1, W156 - Years 2013-2019
Part: Checks and maintenance

To replace the electronic power steering on a Mercedes GLA W156, the procedure is complex and requires lowering the front subframe. Start from the cabin: remove the plastic cover under the steering column and unscrew the 13 mm bolt that secures the steering shaft to the module. Under the vehicle, disconnect the three electrical connectors from the module (one large and two small). Unscrew the three 13 mm bolts that secure the steering assembly to the subframe. To create necessary space, lower the subframe: disconnect the stabiliser bar links (18 mm spanner and 8 mm to hold them), unscrew the 21 mm nut from the ball joints of the wishbones (10 mm spanner to hold the pin), remove the 16 mm bolts securing the subframe to the body (three per side), the 10 mm bolts from the aluminium brackets, and the 13 mm nuts from the catalyst support. Support the subframe with a jack and lower it slowly to extract the steering module. Reassembly is the reverse operation. After replacement, coding or calibration of the module with diagnostic equipment is almost always necessary. Before replacing, check that the issue is not due to voltage drops or corroded connections. The part can be found online used for about £600.
