How the 4Drive Electronic Differential Lock System Works on the Seat Leon

The 4Drive system on the Seat Leon is an intelligent all-wheel drive based on an electronically controlled Haldex clutch. Under normal conditions, torque is primarily directed to the front wheels to conserve fuel. When sensors detect a loss of grip, the multi-plate clutch quickly engages and transfers power to the rear wheels, ensuring traction on slippery surfaces, steep inclines, and heavy loads. The system reacts in milliseconds and distributes torque evenly, enhancing stability and active safety. Completing the system is the electronic differential XDS: when a wheel loses grip, XDS brakes it and transfers torque to the opposite wheel with more grip. In a corner, it brakes the inner wheel and sends more torque to the outer wheel, improving agility and handling.
