Learn how to test the starter relay (solenoid) on your motorcycle. The solenoid is a switch that allows a low current circuit (the start button) to control a high current circuit (from the battery to the starter motor). Identify the two small terminals (the coil); the two large terminals are the main switch. Some models have four connections, so two will be for the coil, and two will be output to the fuse box. Set your digital multimeter to measure resistance in Ohms, connect the probes to the coil terminals (the small ones): the reading should be between 3 and 6 Ohms: this measurement confirms that the internal winding of the coil is intact. The test of the main switch is done first at rest (with the relay unpowered): connect the multimeter to the two large terminals. It will show "OL" or "open circuit", indicating that the contacts are separated. With the relay powered, you should hear a "click": the coil activates and closes the main contacts. While the coil is powered, the reading should be below 1 Ohm; if the reading is high, it means the contacts are corroded, burnt, or not making contact. The relay needs to be replaced. If you do not hear the click, the relay is not receiving power.
